The Brief

For this assignment, I was given the challenge of selecting an area I felt people needed to focus more on. After some deliberation (and, unfortunately, personal experience), I concluded finances would be a valuable area of focus.

Spending mindfully is a skill that many of us unfortunately struggle with. It would therefore be highly valuable if one could receive encouragement of assistance when faced with the task of mindful spending.

To address these, I developed three concepts supported by psychological research to promote mindful spending and improve financial well-being. These concepts aim to empower individuals to make better financial decisions, fostering a healthier relationship with money.

Concept 1

Hesitate is a Google Chrome extension intended to help reduce impulsive purchases made when shopping online. When the user reaches the check out process of their desired purchase, they have the option to reward their digital pet frog 'Pebbles' with exciting items if they delay their purchase.

The interaction incentivises users with positive reinformation to delay their purchases, rewarding their behaviour accordingly. Additionally, the gamification of the design taps into intrinsic motivation by incorporating elements of 'challenge' and 'recognition' to engage users effectively.

Concept 2

'Receipt Me' is an app designed to prevent unnecessary purchases during grocery shopping. Users can create a shopping list before heading to the store. Upon completing their trip, they photograph the receipt. The app then scans the list, identifying any unplanned items. By adhering to their original plan, users receive positive reinforcement from the app.

The gamification aspect incorporates a points system, enhancing user motivation to achieve their goals. These points can potentially be used to upgrade and personalise a digital grocery store within the app. Additionally, the app provides positive emotional feedback upon successful completion of the trip, fostering a sense of recognition for the user's achievement.

Concept 3

'Money Wins' is an app that promotes diverse money-saving strategies. Users are encouraged to share their personal 'money wins' on this social media platform, such as crafting delicious dinners, finding stylish thrifted outfits, or revamping their bedrooms.

Through this platform, users can connect with each other and provide mutual support and advice in making intelligent financial decisions.

The idea draws inspiration from intrinsic motivation theory, focusing on the inherent satisfaction of activities rather than external rewards. It leverages two intrinsic motivators: a sense of belonging within the thrifty community, and the recognition users receive from positive feedback and engagement with other users.
